GAKU Reader Privacy Policy

GAKU Reader (the "Extension") is a Japanese language learning support tool provided by GAKU (seitojapanese.online, "we," "us," or "the school"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the Extension collects and how it is used.
1. Information We Collect
The Extension handles the following information:
(1) Selected Text
When a user selects text on a webpage (such as subtitles or article content), that text is sent to our server (an API proxy hosted on Vercel) and forwarded to an AI language model (Groq API) in order to provide dictionary lookup and word explanation features. Submitted text is used only to generate the requested results and is never used for advertising or user profiling.
(2) Image Search Queries
To display images related to a word, search keywords are sent to Wikimedia Commons to retrieve relevant images.
(3) Account Information
When the Extension is used together with a GAKU account, the login email address is used to authenticate the user and verify eligibility (e.g., student status or subscription plan).
(4) Saved Vocabulary and Learning Data
Words and example sentences saved by the user are linked to the user's GAKU account and stored in our database (Supabase), where they are synced with the vocabulary builder in the main GAKU app.
2. How We Use Information
Collected information is used solely for the following purposes:

Generating dictionary and grammar explanations for selected text

Authenticating user accounts and verifying subscription eligibility (paid/free plans)

Improving the quality of the Extension and related services
3. Sharing with Third Parties
We do not sell or share collected information with third parties without consent, except where required by law.
To provide its features, the Extension integrates with the following third-party services:

Supabase (for storing account information and learning data)
Data sent to these services is processed in accordance with each service's own terms of use and privacy policy.
4. Data Retention
Saved vocabulary and learning data are retained for as long as the user maintains an active GAKU account. Users who wish to have their account deleted may contact us using the information below.
5. Data Management and Deletion
Users can delete their own saved vocabulary entries at any time through the vocabulary builder feature in the GAKU app. To request deletion of an entire account, please contact us using the information below.
6. Children's Privacy
The Extension is a general-purpose tool intended for Japanese language learners. Even when used by minors enrolled in our courses, the information collected is limited to the scope described in this policy.

This policy may be updated from time to time. Any material changes will be announced on this page.
